Dewees Cochran (1892-1991)

Acclaimed by many as the greatest doll artist of the 20th Century, Dewees Cochran brought creativity, imagination and innovation to her doll making.  She was most renowned for her Portrait Dolls.  In 1934 she begin making portrait dolls of real children and was very popular with wealthy clients.  In 1936 she moved to New York and designed for the Effanbee Doll Company.  She designed six dolls that were called American Children.

Between 1936-1939, through Effanbee a doll called Gloria Ann was made.  The doll was around 20", with a closed mouth and an all composition socket head and jointed body. 

Between 2003 and 2004 Effanbee reproduced the Gloria Ann doll and it was dressed by Robert Tonner.  The two dolls pictured below are reproductions of the original Gloria Ann doll by Dewees Cochran.

American Child Grand Finale
1998

This doll is an exact reproduction of the American Child designed for Effanbee Doll Company in 1936 by Dewees Cochran.  The mold was taken from the original composition doll and produced in a limited edition of 1600 pieces.
